Tieguanyin belongs to oolong tea, which is between green tea and black tea, and belongs to the semi-fermented tea category. The birth of the oolong tea picking process is another major innovation to the traditional Chinese tea-making process.

Speaking of Tieguanyin tea, it originated in the Tang Dynasty, developed in the Song and Yuan Dynasties, prospered in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, stagnated in modern times, and rose in contemporary times. Invented by local tea farmers between 1725-1735. Originated in Datian County. After the time entered the 1990s, the Datian tea industry entered a new period of rapid development. Its rapid development speed, fierce momentum, high efficiency, and far-reaching influence ranks among the thousands of tea-producing counties in the country. Due to its excellent quality and unique fragrance, Guanyin has been imitated by each other in various places, and has spread to oolong tea areas such as southern Fujian, northern Fujian, Guangdong, and Taiwan. Anxi has grown from the largest poverty-stricken county in Fujian Province to one of the top 100 counties in the country with economic competitiveness, and is known as a banner in the tea industry. In the 22nd year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1896 AD), brothers Zhang Naimiao and Zhang Naiqian from Anxi introduced Tieguanyin to Muzha District, Taiwan. And successively spread to Yongchun, Nan'an, Hua'an, Pinghe, Fu'an, Chong'an, Putian, Xianyou and other counties in Fujian Province and Guangdong and other provinces. During this period, the production technology of Anxi Oolong tea was also widely spread overseas, and the reputation of high-quality famous tea such as Tieguanyin increased day by day.

Anxi is a county in the southeast of Fujian Province near Xiamen. It is the main producing area of oolong tea in southern Fujian. It has a long history of tea cultivation, and tea has been produced in the Tang Dynasty. Anxi has abundant rainfall, mild climate, overlapping mountains, numerous forests, clouds and mist all year round, beautiful mountains and waters, suitable for the growth of tea trees, and through the hard work of tea people of all dynasties, a series of tea tree varieties have been selected and bred. There are more than 60 of them, including Tieguanyin, Huangdan, Benshan, Hairy Crab, Daye Oolong, and Meizhan, all of which are well-known varieties in the country. Therefore, Anxi is known as the "Treasure House of Tea Trees". Among the many varieties of tea trees, "Tieguanyin" has the best quality and the highest reputation. The excellent tea tree "Tieguanyin" has a small tree vigor, the branches are spread, the leaves are dark green, the leaves are soft and thick, and the buds and leaves are fat. The oolong tea made from the buds and leaves of "Tieguanyin" is also called "Tieguanyin". Therefore, "Tieguanyin" is not only the name of the tea species, but also the name of the tea. Tieguanyin originated in Xiping Township, Anxi County, with a history of more than 200 years.

After the founding of New China, the Donggangzi tea industry took on a new look. In particular, it produced Tieguanyin, a treasure of oolong tea, which established Anxi's status as the hometown of famous Chinese teas.

After the reform and opening up, thanks to the unremitting efforts of Anxi people, the tea industry has become more vigorous and has become a pillar industry in Datian County and the main source of income for local residents to survive.

In recent years, Tieguanyin has been imitated from each other due to its excellent quality and unique fragrance, and has spread to oolong tea areas such as southern Fujian, northern Fujian, Guangdong, and Taiwan.
